At this point if you are reading this post, you should know by now, that my love for Janet Jackson is a forever thing. And for the third time since 2015, I was able to experience the queen live and in color. She just finished up her State of the World Tour and my second experience of this tour was amazing. This time I was able to see her via Panorama Music Festival with a friend in New York.
We spent the entire day at Randall’s Island Park for the festival and it definitely had its perks. From cool light shows to delicious overpriced food. Experiencing up and coming artists like Kailin White and getting hip to bands like Cloves and Pvris, I definitely got musical experience I won’t forget. I was able to see SZA live which was absolutely amazing. She mentioned her previous performance in NY, which was not her best, but she redeemed herself for sure. We lost Cardi B on the lineup due to her pregnancy and last minute Lil Wayne’s “flight was delayed” so that definitely was not something to get excited about. We had to miss out on Gucci Mane, who performed on another stage. I could not lose the spots we had secured to see who we really came for.
Janet Jackson is the only music artist I will ever fan girl over. That means she is someone I will see 100 times and still get excited. During one point during her show she says, “So many hits” and I laugh in agreement because her 90 minute set is literally hit after hit. The State of the World tour is an extension of the Unbreakable World Tour I attended in 2015. To the naked eye, people would think it was the same show based on the set list. However each time I have seen her, there is something more; a new wardrobe, a new song or a new theatrics. The purpose and message behind this show is different too. Each time there is something added that just proves that Janet is worth every penny I spend.
There are few artists that can truly call themselves performers. By definition in my book, a performer is someone who, without theatrics, can keep a crowd engaged and excited. This tour is way less theatrical than Janet’s concerts in the past, but what is truly amazing about Janet on stage is her presence. 20 year old choreography still looks as tight and fresh, energy is still unmatched and the music makes you feel alive. This time around I was able to check my bias. I know there were people in the audience who were not Janet fans by definition yet they were there impressed like the rest of us. Music is definitely a powerful thing and it finds its way to connect us one way or another. I am my happiest when listening to Janet and definitely reach euphoria when I see her live. That night we were all Janet stans in that same place.
Overall seeing Janet this time around was just as good as the first two times. I have made a decision to probably never go to a festival to see an artist I’m genuinely interested in. I am too short to see over people, people get strangely rude, you become too worried about stepping on people and my shoes still haven’t recovered from the mud I stepped in. The festival in general was fun and I enjoyed myself so much that being stranded there for about 45 mins didn’t even upset me. I just think I’ll see Janet again in an arena.
Janet just released another single, Made For Now, featuring Daddy Yankee. The song is doing well on the charts as well as with streaming numbers. This leads me to believe that there may be a fourth time seeing her live in the future. Stays tuned for that & watch the video now on YouTube.
